I want to use the word of God against my temptations like Jesus did when He was tempted, but what encouraging verses are out there to fight against lust?

    Hi Rex!

    Take a look at James 1: 12-16 and I Corinthians 10:6-13.

These verses show us that we are tempted of our own selves. No one is doing this to us. Our own minds are poisoning us against the will of God. What we need is a fear of God that will nullify any temptation in this world, be it lust, drugs, or the fear of man. When we knowingly submit to sin, we are giving it a higher place than God in our lives, and we are left to deal with the bitter, gut turning shame and guilt that follows the choice to act out in lust.

The basis of lust is the flesh. We see the images and bodies, and we think to ourselves deep down, "I want that." Our imaginations gets fired up and before we know it, we are acting out. For as a man thinketh, so is He. Your body will perform as your mind directs it. These old bodies are dead in sin Rex, but we are alive again in Christ Jesus. We have whole new lives that make us feel guilty about doing things that displease our Lord. This is in itself a gift of God, to want to do His will. He gives us the desire and ability to do His will. Whatever God wants, He will provide. Always. The antedote to lust is to grow tired of the guilt and sorrow of acting out. To grow weary of asking Jesus to forgive you of the same sins over and over, to grow tired of questioning yourself if you are "lukewarm" in the faith. If the believer is serious, and when he acts out in lust, the burden on his spirit will get so heavy, he will have to stop the behavior due to the fact that he will feel ripped apart if he doesn't. The price and weight of the guilt will be so enormous, the behavior won't be worth it. This is the work of the Holy Spirit Rex, and if you seek the help of Christ with brutal, open honesty and truth, He will give you more than you ever expected.

God Bless you, and stay focused on Christ. You can do anything by Him.

To fight temptation I would recommend utilizing the Christian armour mentioned in Eph 6:13-18:

put on the belt of truth
put on the breastplate of righteousness
have your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace
above all, take up the shield of faith to quench the fiery darts of the wicked one
make sure you put on the helmet of salvation
take up the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God
don't forget prayer: praying always with prayer and supplication
    watch with perseverance

    May God bless!

Rex, I lead a bible study dealing with lust and pornography addiction. Speaking from my own experiences there are several verses that can be used to help fend off attack.

the first verse I memorized with 1 Corinthians 10:13 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

The Lord will always provide a way out when we are tempted if we choose to take it.

I would also recommend purchasing the book every mans battle. This has some techniques that you can use like bouncing your eyes. Basically the most important thing initially is that you turn the sewage pipe off, that means no more visual stimuli. Make a covenant with your eyes like Job did.

    Job 31:1
"I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl.

Then it becomes a battle of the mind and we can control our thoughts. Even though because of the warring against our flesh it seems like we cannot.

    2 Corinthians 10:5
We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

My greatest advice is to begin to spend more time in the word of God daily and spend time directly in prayer asking for God to help you overcome. Each day the spirit will get stronger or the flesh will and not doing anything will make the flesh stronger. Get yourself in an accountability - recovery group with other Christians dealing with your battle. When you get with a group of Christians and share and confess your sins something happens and the enemy loses his ability to isolate and the strongholds begin to dissapear.

Also reference the armor of God in Ephesians 6 which has already been posted.

I just want to throw out there that the ancients had a much easier time with this, and Jesus knows it. The women back then were covered with lots of loose cloth. Imagine how much easier it would be to avoid 'looking with lust' if the girls of today were all wearing burkhas instead of basically showing everything!
Conversely, just imagine if a man from 1st century Judea were suddenly transported to a college campus of today, or even your local mall! He would pass out. Those guys never had to deal with what we 20th century men have to deal with visually. It's really unfair! (whine)
And they didn't have pornography to tempt them at all!!!

Galatians 5:16 - But I say, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

If you are living a Spirit filled life, lust will have a harder time getting to you. Pray to The Lord and ask him to forgive you, give Him your troubles and ask Him to fill you.
