Is the Gog Magog war supposed to happen before or after the tribulation?
I do not think it is set in stone as God does not tell us if it before of after.
Personally, I believe it will be just before or immediately after the rapture. I've often felt that the events of the rapture could lead to this war as the world will not know what happened, and once they see the U.S. weakened and ineffective due to millions suddenly missing, Gog will give the order to go against Israel.
Mid-trib doesn't seem to fit because it is the anti christ who ignites a series of wars by committing the abomoination of desolation and Israel flees the wrath, whereas in the battle of Gog/Magog Israel is victorious, thanks to God.
Post trib doesn't seem to fit, because Israel is dwelling in safety when this battle takes place and at the end of the tribulation they will be hiding out in Petra.
So it seems to be around the time of the rapture.
I believe it will be before tribulation begins... it might be the catalyst for the 7 year peace agreement since the world will see that God intervened and whupped Israel's attackers. The reason I place it before the start of tribulation is because the Word says something about Israel using the military stuff abandoned on their territory for fuel for a whopping 7 years....

There are two Gog Magog Wars. The second comes at the end of the Millenium. The first will come wither during the Tribulation or sometime before and I think the general belief of this board is that it will happen before the Trib, which is my position.
After the battle of gog and magog Ezekiel goes into the building of the tribulation temple.

It will take place before or right at the beginning. Israel will be living securely. At the end of the Tribulation they are not living securely in their land they are hiding in Petra.
Some things going on in Israel during the first 3.5 years in the time of the coming world leader.
1.) The Temple will be rebuilt
2.) Sacrifices re-established
3.) A covenant/treaty is established with the many
Do these things sound like Israel is in great trouble? No.
Their eyes will be blown open completely when the coming world leader betrays them, cuts off the sacrifice and declares himself god. The persecution that will take place of the Jews during the last 3.5 years will drive them to call upon the LORD.
Yes there will be great calamity and chaos, a period of peace(White horseman) followed by horrendous war (Red horseman) 1/4 of the population dies in these wars followed by pestilence and famine then more death. If the Jewish people are persecuted in their own land during the first 3.5 years how can they be performing the rituals at the Temple?

I believe it happens close to midtrib. Let's not forget: it takes fire to melt "swords into plowshares" postrib.
And there is absolutely no way Israel rebuilds the temple and tears down her walls in "preparation for Gog" without a peace covenant in place.
I believe the account of the Gog war is also written in Joel 2 if that helps. The "locust" army is Gog's army. As in Dan 11:40 he sweeps out of the north like a "whirlwind" and in Joel 2:20 we see him driven back to the desolation he made of northern Israel and there he will be destroyed by the hand of God!
And it is the revival in Jerusalem that I would have you pay attention to. The destruction of Gog is, I believe, the 6th seal, Rev 6:12. Likely the 144,000 are sealed following the revival and 6th seal. Also, AC is going to break his covenant over the issue of them turning to God.

I agree that Gog Magog happens before the trib. I think an attack by Israel on Iran will be the catalyst.
My vote is for during the tribulation period or after the rapture occurs. God's intervention on behalf of Israel seems to not fit well in the age of Grace dispensation.
In other words it seems more like an Old Testament act of God. I know we can not put God in a box. He can do what he wants when he wants but it just seems more consistent that it takes place after the church is gone.
Possible senario
1. The US or Israel destroys Irans nuke facilities. Iran blocks the Gulf and turns its surrogates loose.
2. The nations on Israels northern border Gaza and the west bank are drawn into a war with Israel (Isaiah 17, Psalms 83). Damascus is destroyed and Israel immediate enemies.
3. World wide economic chaos draws Russia into a once in a life time move into the middle east. Iran will be enraged and will follow suit along with Turkey and the other allies in Ezekiel 38. There seems to some small move by Russia before this and God will turn them back then put hooks into there jaws and bring them down.
4. The invasion is destroyed and we move to Ezekiel 42 where the Tribulation Temple is built.
Between 1 and 4 the Rapture
5. Consolidation of world power caused by the crisis of the rapture, oil shortage and the two middle east wars.
6. The great tribulation.
As we draw closer to the Rapture the world events will focus in the Word of God to the point where we will know it is close even at the door. so this senario is humbly put forth which with farther events will cause me to rethink the prophecies.

I beleive the gog / magog war happens before the trib. and it will be the "unveiling" of the ac ...satan always tries to mimic God.
Jesus returns with his saints at the battle of armegeddon. satan will "come" during the battle of gog / magog with his "fallen angels" presenting himself as the "savior" ...

Excellent observation, and God tells us clearly in His Word that He will return His focus to His people. Gods intervention does indeed not fit into the age of Grace. Ezekiel 38-39 is a beautiful moment in all of time. It is all about God returning fully to His people...His First Born...the Apple of His Eye, and is beautiful to read.

If God puts "hooks in your jaw" you would have no choice but to go. Maybe Russia is drawn, or led into a conflict. Maybe an attack on Iran or another middle east ally of Russia compels them to act on behalf of their own interest
I think this war happens prior to the tribulation period. Sequentially that would make sense to me personally. As far as before or after the rapture? Who knows?
I think it happens pre-trib as it will probably be the event that God uses to "spiritually awaken" the Jews. There are estimates that Israel is currently about 90% secular as it is. With only about 10% being so called "religious". I think the Gog/Magog event rekindles that fire in their hearts and they will want to return to OT style worship with a Temple.
An interesting note is that the Temple Institute in Jerusalem has just about completed all the items need to resume OT Temple worship. I think that is a sign we are getting close.
