Default How to pick out a short hair cut that won't make me look like a boy?

i will be getting it cut short soon. probably not in the next couple days unless i go manic and freak out and get a buzzcut.

but HOW do i pick a style?
i'm not a girly girl and sometimes i feel like my features are a bit mannish- hence the long hair, its about the most feminine thing i have going.

i'm not a small woman and since the new baby, its gotten slightly worse.

but i HATE having my hair back in a ponytail, constantly.

i could go through the books at the salon, but that would be picking one like 5 minutes before i get the cut, and frankly half of those pics in the salon books make me go "for real?"

    any suggestions?

    i am totally lost.

Do you know anyone who has a short hair cut you like? Ask if you can take their picture and take it to the salon with you.

definitly find a picture. I had long hair all my life, ponytailed to death since kindergarten!!!! I wanted a 'one handed' do with no work, since my brain surgery left me with the use of only right arm/hand, it takes a while to find what works for ya, how hair will lay, etc, so ya might not get exactly what ya want right off the bat, but I LOVE SHORT HAIR!!!!! I just add a bit of water or whatever,1 minute or less and I'm done! WOW, never thought I could have short hair, but am ABSOLUTELY lovin the no muss no fuss! I started out with a 1'' razored pixie, made some changes, now I can walk out the door with little fixinso great

Go and try on some wigs! Seriously, that might give you an idea. Find pictures, look at the shape of your face, your lifestyle, your personality. You don't have to whack it all off at once. You could start out going a bit shorter than you have your hair now, just to get the feel for it. Then see what you think.

i like this one, but i'm not sure its wash and wear and i have thin hair with very little body to it

and if i want to donate my hair, i do have to whack it off, it is just over the 10" minimum donation length...

I like it! It's a bit longer than mine! Not sure how it will work with fine hair. Perhaps a little bit of a body perm with the cut would work? But I really like it!

the woman in the picture appears to have my attitude!

perms and my hair = disaster, so i might have to use product.

i think i have a big face, but my body and flat hair make me think my head looks small... like a grape on top of a tomato, so some fluff might help a lot. if i were still thin i'd be fine.

my mom's friend is a really good stylist, i might take this pic to her. normally i'm ok with Supercuts for end trimming and neatening up, but i think i need more high-end help for this decision.

honestly, though if this goes badly, i'm ok with baseball hatting for a while. its this rope hanging down my back and pulling on my scalp that is driving me crazy.

I say go for it. It's just hair. Pony tails are hard on the scalp. Besides, it's always nice to try something new! Good luck.

Do you have straight or natural curly or wavy hair? That is the first thing you need to think about. Natural curly or wavy become more so without the weight of long hair. Is your hair fine or coarse, I think you said fine. Do you have a thick head of hair and where is your cowlik? You should do fine with a pixie to start with and the decide if you want to keep it or let it grow longer. Also bangs you have to decide on that too. OK miss know it all get of the podium now.

Bangs are great. I think they take years off a person's age!!!!!

If you find a good stylist, they can make fine hair of any length have body. I have fine shoulder length hair, but the cut I have makes my hair have body. It's layered, with long sideswept bangs. Just a simple blow dry and a little spray is all I usually use. There's also some shine (it's a thick liquid) stuff that I rub in my palms and use to texture the ends for a different look sometimes.

Call salons and ask around for someone who specializes in fine hair/short styles.

Another thin haired person here, too .

Go to a really good salon. Call the person at the front desk and tell them that you're looking for a hair make over and that you'd like someone who can point you in a direction that will flatter your facial shape and is good with different hair types. I've always found the cuts I'm happiest with are the ones where I give them free reign to do their job within certain perameters (ie: I give them an approximate length and tell them that I spend maybe 5 minutes "doing" my hair but I want it to look decent).

I have baby fine and thin hair too. I have always wanted the long naturally rippled hair that some women are blessed with but while I have had long hair it was never really attractive on me except when I was college age.
Now my hair is short and I really like it that way. I don't even go through a bottle of shampoo in a year! I just wash it, let it dry naturally and sometimes put some mousse on. I am not one of these women that are good at styling hair but this even I can do.
The suggestions on here are all very good and I like the style you picked out. You could also go to like a Barnes and Noble where they have a lot of hair style magazines. Many of them tell you what styles are for what hair texture. If you find some you like take them all to the beauty parlor and ask the beautician which of those would work best for you. If they are a good stylist they will question you as to how short you want to go, how much time and money you want to spend on upkeep of the style, etc.

I actually look at the models in the JC Penny's, and other weekly store ads that come out. I figure they are probably up to date styles and they have a variety of styles to look at.
I have fine hair and in order to have any body I have to have lots of layers, a blow dryer and curling iron. Fortunately, I am used to doing it so it doesn't take long anymore.

That style is cute and it will work with fine hair, you may just have to put a little extra product in it to make it work like that.

When I decided to go short, I cut off about 14 inches. It was a little drastic but I loved it. I ended up going with a style that is similar to the one you posted. My hair is fine but it is extremely thick. The only other thing you have to think about is you'll have to go to the salon more often to keep it clean and looking good.
