Thread: Help! I'm have anxiety about school!

  1. Help! I'm have anxiety about school!

My grandson{who lives with me} started 1st grade today. He did his 1st yr. of kindergarden in school but last yr. I decided to home school.{I held him back because of his reading skills} My daughter suggested homeschooling for me since she homeschools her boys anyway so I was glad to go along with it. Well I decided he needed to go back to public school as my daughter has waaay to many things on her plate but I am so nervous because Im not good with my face to face social skills nor am I ready for all the junk kids have to deal with in school. I didnt do a very good job with my own kids. Kindergarden was bad enough but 1st grade! I just pray that I can handle every situation in a manner that pleases God. I pray for Favor toward my grandson. The school he attends is a very good school and you have to really work hard at making the grade and Im just not that school smart. Even his kindergarden work{ Im embarressed to say} was hard for me to understand as I suffer from ADHD. I didnt do well in school at all and ended up quiting. Please pray with me about this and any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks

My kids all went to and are currently in public schools. During the early years I augmented their reading and math with work at home. This little bit of work has paid good dividends.

I have three boys, all in grade school. We always supplement their regular school work with work at home (especially in reading, math and writing).

This has always made a tremendous difference for them personally and academically.

A little bit of advice: My oldest son had trouble with reading and math early on. We took him to a behavior optometrist, who examined him and suggested vision therapy. He went through this therapy (6 months or so), and now he is ahead of his class. Please look up Excel Institute online for more information. I know that if we hadn't explored this avenue and taken advantage of the therapy, my son would still be struggling through school. Certainly, I am not trying to tell you that your grandson has this problem, but many children with ADD, ADHD and Dyslexia just need to go through vision therapy (not a drug). The reason I mention it is because this is often a hereditary thing...and you mentioned that you yourself have ADHD.

Good luck! And don't worry. Your love, concern and support will go a long way to help your grandson!

  4. Thank you both for your advice! It is very helpful!
