Omaha UCC church pastor Don Hammond a & church member fail to understand what a church's mission is.

this is from a UCC church in my town's blog

I am posting it cause it shows how clueless some liberal churches are when it comes to what the Progressive Christianity movement (a oxy-moron if I ever heard one) is

    QUOTE

Yesterday I said from the pulpit that mission is the essential character of the church. What is your thought? If you agree, what kind of mission does FCUCC need to be leading in? If you disagree, what to you believe the church, especially FCUCC, needs to be about?

    Don Hammond

repsonse on the blog from a member named Hanna:

Mission is essential to the survival and vitality of any organization.

As a congregation, we must focus on the issues and work that promote our values, goals and vision for this community.

I suggest we take a survey of our neighborhood, our city and national and international scene. And link our selves to projects that help those in need.

(billiefan2000 side note: does that quote remind anyone of the missional or seeker-driven movement and how it does church

For example, because of the gentrification happening around midtown, we might consider helping those who are being displaced or left without essential services.

(billiefan2000 side note: I actually agree with that last quote and I think that is a good idea

On a city wide level, we could push for accountability and respect and stewardship of city resources. On a national level, we could further support and advocate for the rights of minorities and those who cannot speak for themselves.

As the saying goes, we need to put our money where our mouth is, by further showing support for projects and causes which are at the heart of the progressive Christian movement.

The UCC is an natural ally for those in need and so is First Central.

I'm proud to be apart of a church and national church organization, which is open to all and continues it's long history of fighting for social justice.

here is good a answer and probably one that would offend Hanna and Don and the others at First Central Congregational Church of Omaha Nebraska:

    the church's mission is:

To proclaim the Gospel throughout the world and make disciples of all kinds of people. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:19-20).

"And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature" (Mark 16:15).

to Hanna and Don and the others at First Central Congregational Church of Omaha Nebraska

you need to have your church be preaching the gospel and have your church preach on SIN and REPENTANCE and preach the gospel of JESUS CHRIST

and stop preaching universalism and stop preaching the liberal social gospel that your church promotes

I dont mind you guys helping out the community and helping those in need.

in fact, I applaud you guys helping folks out.

But we should also be also preaching the gospel and witnessing to the lost, not just being involved in social justice.

BTW to First Central Congregational Church of Omaha Nebraska:

    John 14:6

Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

that means the Universalism that your church promotes is a lie.

I agree Billie... The gospel message is of sin, repentance and salvation through the belief of the ressurrection of Jesus Christ and His eventual return. The whole purpose of a church is for believers to work together in communicating this message that grows more and more extinct each last day.

    Missional... missional... missional...

    blah... blah... blah...

Nothing wrong with being on a mission for God's purpose but to be on a mission for God's purpose the church must be obeying God to be considered within His missional parameters.

God didn't say to pick up trash in the neighborhood or to only help a homeless guy get a free meal. He said to preach the gospel to people so that they become saved from going to hell which is the gospel message.

I am so happy to hear that my new church serves the community and I may join this after knowing a little more about them. I am especially happy that this church told me that when they do serving activities in the community it is not for liberal social justice or to run a phialnthropic social club but to accompany the good deeds with a gospel message so that people can hear the Word and become saved from going to hell.
