    Up Close and Personal
    By: Maxine M.

Somewhere in the land of Israel, a small tree seed fell to the ground and started to sprout
With sunshine and moisture it slowly grew, of its potential and strength there was no doubt
Years went by and the tree gradually matured, becoming tall, strong and stout

Its branches spread far out, people enjoyed its shade, under it children played
But the tree somehow felt unfulfilled, that a GREATER purpose was somehow underway
Then one day some men came by, “This one will do fine”, they were overheard to say

Soon the tree felt a sharp blow, a very stinging bite which continued until the tree started to shake
Suddenly the tree toppled, what a tremendous crashing noise it would make
Axes shaped its downed body; one piece tall & straight, a shorter crossbeam this cross would take

Its readiness complete, soon it would be carried out to the “SKULL”…the name of Calvary’s hill
A crowd approached; out front was a young Man bleeding and bruised, down His face blood would spill
The crowd was shouting, “Crucify Him!”, but His face would, in the tree, a sense of awe instill

The tree was lifted onto the shoulders of this One they called Jesus; soldiers kept pushing Him along
But He struggled under the load, the beatings had taken a toll…now no longer was He physically strong
Some women were weeping, others still yelling angry insults, creating a mighty throng

Jesus stumbled and a bystander was ordered to pick the cross up and help the rest of the way
The Man was stripped naked, cruelly nailed to the tree and put on open public display
The tree and Jesus were up close and personal, its fibers SOAKED with His blood, ultimate suffering the scene would portray

Words were spoken, a difficult task at best as His lungs were compressed
He had to push up on the nerves of torn feet, thus bringing excruciating pain…but Jesus met the test
Thus, the words spoken were VERY important and would forever be blessed

“Father, forgive them, they know not what they do!”, He spoke clearly
He told John He was giving him the responsibility for the mother He loved dearly
A soldier standing by said, “TRULY this was the Son of God”…I believe it sincerely

The tree then realized why it had held this Man in such HIGH respect
The Son of GOD!! This was Holy Blood which drenched it, couldn’t the crowd detect?!
What an HONOR, that from the beginning, the Creator, this tree itself He’d select!!

One of those crucified with Him asked for forgiveness, seeing Jesus had changed his point of view
At noon the sky went black, the veil in the temple was torn in two
Jesus, in agony, cried out, “My God!! Why have You forsaken Me?”; the tree wondered what now will ensue

At 3:00 in the afternoon the Man said, “It is finished” and breathed His last
A man named Joseph came and took Him down, wrapped the body in a clean linen as was forecast
The tree was sorrowful that He was gone, but somehow figured the consequence of today would be vast

Since this was the first crucifixion the tree had experienced, it was shocked at the horrible anguish & pain
The prime example of man’s inhumanity to man, there’s just no way to explain
In the mind of those who had watched, how could any thoughts of compassion remain

Now we are not told WHAT happened to the cross…was it ever used again?
I believe God would NOT permit that, because of the part it played in the Salvation of man
PERHAPS we’ll encounter it in Heaven, beyond the Pearly Gates…standing just within

The actual symbol of how Faith in the Son’s death & resurrection brought us here
Thankful we accepted the gift in which that day provided, making our NEED of a Savior so clear
And Thankful that one day, we’ll forever be able to SEE Him face to face, kneel before our Lord so DEAR
