    Could he ever be free?
    By: Maxine M.

The headlines were all about a social leader who was murdered last night
Down at the police station tips kept pouring in, new data coming to light
Reporters were calling for information; to break the story 1st was their delight

Circumstantial evidence all pointed to Ted, the victim’s off-beat brother-in-law
Facts were misinterpreted, family and acquaintances told about his fatal flaw
So he was arrested, put on trial, the courtroom awaited for what conclusion the jury would draw

He was found GUILTY!! Sentenced to years in prison, BUT Ted hadn’t done this evil deed
Anger and bitterness grew in his heart; why wouldn’t anyone, his cry of innocence, heed
Why would the true murderer be allowed to go free, their hidden actions succeed

Why was he paying for someone else’s crime…it just wasn’t fair
He pondered daily how he had ended up in this situation, this horrible stigma wear
Would the TRUTH ever come out, because only by TRUTH will this injustice receive repair

So day after day Ted’s discouragement ate away at the thoughts of his mind
The unfairness he was suffering, how could the court & society have been so blind?
Where in this cold, damp, dreary prison cell, could he, hope of unbiased treatment find?

Then one day someone’s radio was tuned to a program; he listened to what this Reverend had to say
He was telling how the very SINLESS Son of God came to earth as a baby one day
How He grew to manhood; in everything He did, His Father’s demands He’d obey

He went about teaching, healing, helping the poor, God’s message of love He’d broadcast
Warning of Judgement coming down the road, that the consequences of sins are vast
His words penetrated to the very depth of the human soul…words that will forever last

Jealous “religious leaders” put Him on trial for blasphemy, but no TRUE proof could be found
They pronounced Jesus “GUILTY” and Ted could relate to that abominable sound
The preacher said they struck Him, whipped Him, humiliated Him and led Jesus away bound

At the end of the radio program the Reverend asked if anyone listening wanted to accept Jesus as Lord today
Ted felt compelled to, but thought, I want to know more of what this Jesus had to say
Tomorrow he’d ask for a bible, perhaps some of his doubt could be turned away

The next day a guard brought Ted a bible and he found the passages the Reverend had read
It told him how they had CRUCIFIED Jesus, nailed Him naked to a cross, a crown of thorns pushed on His head
It said that this was payment for OUR sins…the reason His blood was shed

That from the cross, He’d said, “Father, forgive them” (Luke 23:34); by My death their souls I can save
Now since the tomb couldn’t hold Him, Satan was DEFEATED…we no longer need to be his slave
Ted read of Resurrection Sunday, showing (Luke 24:6) how Jesus had conquered death and the grave

Ted realized even though he hadn’t committed the crime which had sent him here
He’d done plenty of other things, cheated on taxes, lied to those he held most dear
Had paid for an ex-girlfriend’s abortion, had constantly bought teens cigarettes and beer

Yes!! He’d done plenty of sins for which he should pay a punishable price
He was a poor excuse of a husband, he’d never learned to take good advice
But the preacher had said JESUS was SINLESS (1 Peter 2:22), went about doing good & being nice

Ted felt tears welling up, considering the LOVE Jesus’ death & resurrection had shown
How his own sins could be washed away clean…the assurance of Heaven set in stone
Even if he never got out of this prison cell, the truth of the murder never known

He could be FREE in his spirit, just by receiving the Gift of Salvation offered to all
Because ALL have sinned & fallen short of God’s Glory (Romans 3:23), and need NOW to answer His call
Ted read, Today!! is the day of Salvation (2 Corinthians 6:2)…so he fell to his knees, facing the wall

He asked Jesus to forgive him, be with him as his Lord, Master and Guide
The old bitterness, anger and resentment left him, that sense of injustice suddenly died
An inner peace filled his heart, a joy he’d never known & happiness he’d never hide
