I have three babies, and even though they were all c-sections I did have active labor as well. The thing about birth pangs, is that you often can have weeks or months of false labor (Braxton Hicks contractions). This happened with me with my middle child especially, who I tried for a vbac with and thus went 2 weeks and 2 days overdue with. I was in agony for weeks and weeks before--about 8 weeks--because every day I had false labor. But it was never as bad as the real thing. Once the real thing hits...YOU KNOW. It's just different. It's intense. It makes you wish it were just the Braxton Hicks again.

And even though it feels like a long time, actual, uninterrupted natural labor is very rapid. Contractions come one after another before you can recover from one another one comes (and that's the feeling I'm getting from these fires, Harvey, Irma, Jose, Katia, not to mention the flooding in Asia right now...). And then you think you're going to die...and that's usually a point where you're almost there. I'd say we've been experiencing the false labor for decades now. When I was pregnant, a midwife told me the average first time labor is about 16 hours, but the average subsequent labor is half that. Compared to the entire pregnancy itself, it's very fast!

But you're right--there's so much beauty and hope beyond the pain! "He will wipe every tear" is a great analogy to that "mother's amnesia" we experience once we have our baby.

And congratulations, Lamb. I remember a long time ago reading a post about your struggles to have a baby, at least I think that was you?
Thank you so much for that, Gooseberry! It makes so much sense, and your description is exactly what I needed to better understand. I was wondering if this was considered legit "Beginning of Sorrows" stuff - or if we've been in the Sorrows for awhile now. What would your guess be?

Mother's Amnesia is such a glorious thing! I literally had ZERO contractions that I felt, but nurse kept asking me, "did you feel that one?" NOPE. I DID, however have TWO kidney stones and sister, let me tell you, I never want to experience that again.

..and GREAT memory. Yes, it was me. I have my own little lambchop now. . I'm so happy to be a mommy. He might be our only, but he's so very special and the perfect fit for us! God is good - and I always tell myself, "if it would've happened A SECOND sooner, then it wouldn't be him!" God's timing really is perfect.

Congrats on THREE. Bless your heart. He keeps me busy and he's my only! I give mamas of 2+ such credit!

      • Mexico earthquake 8.1

I haven't seen anything posted about the Mexican earthquake that happened last Thursday (I may have missed the posting, though.)
        http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/08/americ...ico/index.html

At least 61 people have died after the most powerful earthquake to hit Mexico in a century struck off the southern coast.
The magnitude 8.1 quake, which was felt as far as Mexico City and Guatemala City, was registered off Mexico's southern coast just as heavy rains from Hurricane Katia lashed the east. The epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, some 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of the capital and 74 miles (120 kilometers) off the coast.

        More on link above.

Is it me, or has there been a dramatic increase in the number of earthquakes lately? Seems like about a month ago or so, the shake map was nearly blank......

As of right now, the count is at least 67 dead, and 500 injured. I''m assuming those numbers will change. Praying for these people!
