Polar bears have symptoms of mystery disease - U.S. agency

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - Symptoms of a mysterious disease that has killed scores of seals off Alaska and infected walruses are now showing up in polar bears, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said on Friday.

Nine polar bears from the Beaufort Sea region near Barrow were found with patchy hair loss and oozing sores on their skin, similar to conditions found in diseased seals and walruses, the agency said in a statement.

Unlike the sickened seals and walruses, the affected polar bears seem otherwise healthy, said Tony DeGange, chief of the biology office for the USGS's Alaska Science Center. There had been no deaths among polar bears, he said.

The nine affected bears were among the 33 that biologists have captured and sampled while doing routine studies on the Arctic coastline, DeGange said.

Patchy hair loss has been seen before in polar bears, but the high prevalence in those spotted by the researchers and the simultaneous problems in seal and walrus populations elevate the concern, he said.

The USGS is coordinating with agencies studying the other animals to investigate whether there is a link, he said.

"There's a lot we don't know yet, whether we're dealing with something that's different or something that's the same," he said.

The disease outbreak was first noticed last summer. About 60 seals were found dead and another 75 diseased, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Most of the affected seals are ringed seals, but diseased ribbon, bearded and spotted seals were also found.

Several walruses in northwestern Alaska were found with the disease, and some of those died as well, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The diseased seals and walruses, many of them juveniles, had labored breathing and lethargy as well as the bleeding sores, according to the experts. The agencies launched an investigation into the cause of the disease, which has also turned up in bordering areas of Canada and Russia.

Preliminary studies showed that radiation poisoning is not the cause, temporarily ruling out a theory that the animals were sickened by contamination from the tsunami-wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan.

Oh, sure. it couldn't be the most obvious answer. I'll bet you can expect those "preliminary studies" to be kept preliminary for a very long time, too. No reason to panic the people until they start glowing in the dark.

Yep,it would probably scare the heck out of us if we knew everything that they keep from us.

Interesting... Two possible sources could be the Japanese Nuclear power plant disaster and the entry of nuclear contamination into the aquatic food chain, but don't know if there is a connection with the critters around Japan and the ultimate food sources for the Alaskan animals involved. The other could be leakage from Russian nuclear weapons tests. I'm led to believe that a lot of Siberia is an environmental wasteland due to many shortsighted abuses... part of that area is polar bear country too, I think...

I wonder if it is caused by their love of drinking coke?

This is clearly a case of global warming.
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Cor 1:18

I never understood why coke would use a vicious animal to promote their soda.

My husband knew a woman who lost both arms to a bear. They are vicious predators.

I agree with the others, it sounds like radiation to me.

" I have had an increasing burden to engage in some down and dirty, street evangelism." March 6, 2010

Isaiah 6:8 I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “ Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?”

Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

                      Matthew 22:9 NIV
'So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’

                      I'm praying for you daily!

Polar bears are vicious yes and can very easily kill and tear you limb to limb but........I have always thought they looked so huggable.I have always wanted to just go up to one and hug them.Ofcourse I dare not do that.If their are polar bears in Heaven maybe I will someday.

Just tonight on the local news there was a story about a lot of fish dying in a town about 15 miles from here. The news reporter said officials had said it was due to recent warm weather and the rain we just had! It has been 75 to 80 degrees the past week! Since when has that caused a fish die off? If that was the case then every summer here in Texas when it is over 100 degrees for the most part of 3 months a ton of fish should die every time it rains. My husband -who usually doesn't notice the nonsense the "officials" tell us even turned to me with a look of shock on his face when that came on the news.

Preperations for a famine? (revelations 6:5-6; The Black Horse)

Bees are dying off, the ones that pollenate the trees and flowers. Bats, too -- they eat the bugs that destroy crops. Now massive fish and bird kills -- they, too, also eat crop killing bugs, plus provide meals to all manner of mammals and sea life.

Maybe this particular stage is being set.

I don't want to scare anyone, but I know someone who has worked on the Fukushima problem. This person is obviously not allowed to say anything, but the very fact that this person was called in points to it being a HUGE problem, nothing that can just be swept under the rug and ignored. He was called to work on this a few times in the past year, not just once.

Since there is nothing that can be done, I can see why the world governments, especially Japan and the US, would keep this secret to avoid mass panic. Nonetheless...the fact that the goal there is to shut down all reactors, and that so many have already been shut down, and that they are ahead of schedule in doing so, shows there are still real problems.

This would really bother me if I realized how bad it is, and didn't have the hope of heaven. Knowing I belong to Jesus puts a lot of the things going on in the world, including nuclear radiation, in an entirely different light.

My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; the flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; the fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
