Several Bartlesville churches are putting their faith in action on Oct. 18 when traditional services will be cancelled in favor of providing community service.

The Big Serve event will put a minimum of 1,000 people – and possibly more than 2,500 – on the streets during a Sunday morning time slot in which they traditionally would be participating in a worship service.

The initial idea for the project came through pastors from area churches who regularly meet for prayer each week…

Though several churches are considering participation and individuals from various congregations plan to join in the mission projects,

the core group that is leading the project includes Christ Community Church, First Wesleyan Church of Bartlesville,

First Assembly of God of Bartlesville,

Life Church of Bartlesville and Bartlesville Southern Baptist.

Why? What's the purpose? While picking up trash is an ok thing to do, but they are cancelling Sunday service to do so? How is picking up trash going to bring people to church, and find God?

Are churches trying to do "works" to look better/attract other people? I don't get it.

What has happened to good old fashioned church?????

How is picking up trash going to bring people to church, and find God?
If you notice in the NT, 'church' was not something you brought people to to find God. 'Church' was a service for God's people - a time to learn how to serve each other, and learn how to be an example for the world. 'Church' taught Christians how to go out to make new disciples for the church.

Picking up trash is could well be a better ice-breaker than knocking on doors annoying people.
